Art Critique of "Girl with a Pearl Earring" This painting is called "Girl with a Pearl Earring". The painting is by Johannes Vermeer.  It was painted around 1665.  The painting is an oil on canvas.  It is a picture of a young European girl wearing a dress turban and a large pearl earring. In the original painting, Vermeer used vivid colors.  Red and brown were used for her skin.  Dark green was used for the background.  He avoided hard lines.  He relied on shades of light and shadow. Some think that Vermeer used a camera obscura to capture the scene because of the soft focus and that it almost looks like a photograph. The girl in the picture is unknown, but thought to be Vermeer's 13 year old daughter.  It is almost like the viewer has caught the girl's attention causing her to turn her head. The girl is gazing at the viewer with wide eyes and a parted mouth creating an air of mystery. My favorite part of the "Girl with a Pearl Earring...
